What’s Clogging Your Drains?

Whether it’s the wet winters or the hot and humid summers in Augusta, GA, it’s hard to avoid muck on your kitchen and bathroom surfaces. However, when you think about what lives inside your drain and what you’re putting down there, you may decide to make some changes. Here are some things you’ll find inside your drains.

Scum From Soap

Soap scum from your bath or shower leaves behind a film of residue that can gradually clog your drains over time. Unfortunately, bar soaps are the biggest culprit. Clumps of bar soap can quickly solidify inside your drains. If you want to avoid clogged drains, try switching to liquid soap. It’s gentler on pipes and drains and won’t leave as much residue or form clumps the way bar soap does.

Cooking Fats and Oils

If you cook every day, a lot of fats and oils are probably going down your drain. When you pour these substances down your drain, they are likely in liquid form. However, fat quickly hardens, and when it does, it will clog your pipes. To avoid this, let leftover cooked fat in pots and pans harden at room temperature. Once it hardens, wipe the container with a paper towel and dump the towel and the goo in the trash.

Pet Hair

Many people like to wash their dogs in their bathtubs. However, this can cause a lot of problems for your drains over time. Even if you have a waste catcher in place, shorter hair can still go through. Avoid washing your pet in your bathroom. Instead, bathe your furry friend in the yard, or take them to a groomer. You’ll be doing your drains a huge favor.

Human Hair

Pet hair isn’t the only thing that causes clogs in your drain; human hair does, too. Whenever you wash your hair, it’s only natural that some will come out and go down the drain. To keep hair from going down the drain, install a drain cover to catch it.

Tissues and Paper Towels

Unfortunately, some people blow their noses and throw the used tissues in the toilet. Others wipe spilled liquid off the floor with a paper towel and dump that into the toilet. Sometimes, it’s a simple case of running out of toilet paper and using a paper towel instead. However, tissues and paper towels are too thick for the toilet, and they can’t be broken down and torn apart. What’s the result? You’ll have a clogged toilet in no time.
